Check for Valid Gmail ID

You can connect to and interface with an email server directly through the Windows Command Prompt using the Telnet application. In this way, you can confirm that an email address is valid before sending a message to that address. If you have a Gmail account that you're concerned may not exist, connect to Google's mail server and confirm that the address is valid.

Click the Windows orb, and then click "Control Panel."

Click "Programs and Features" or "Uninstall a Program."

Click the "Turn Windows features on or off" link on the left side of the window.

Place a check in the box next to "Telnet Client."

Click "OK." Windows enables the Telnet feature for the MS-DOS Command Prompt.

Click the Windows orb again. Type "cmd" in the search field at the bottom of the menu, and then press "Enter." Windows opens the Command Prompt.

Type "telnet gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com 25" in the Command Prompt window, and then press "Enter." The Telnet utility connects to the Gmail server and the window turns blank.

Type "helo" and press "Enter." The screen displays the message "250 mx.google.com at your service."

Type "mail from:<email address>" and press "Enter." The address that you enter in place of "email address" doesn't need to be real; for example, you can type "mail@example.com." The window displays the message "OK" along with a string of letters and numbers.

Type "rcpt to:<Address you want to check>" and press "Enter." For example, to see if the address "email@gmail.com" is valid, type "rcpt to:<email@gmail.com>." If the address exists, the window displays the message "OK." If the address doesn't exist, the window displays the message "The email account that you tried to reach does not exist."
