Server Denied Gmail POP3 Access

If you don't want to access Gmail via its Web-based interface, you can set up an email client such as Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird to retrieve email messages from the Gmail server using POP3 access. If retrieving mail via the mail client fails, one potential cause is a wrong username and password combination.

Gmail Username and Password
When you log in to Gmail from the Web, you can do so using two means: Either inputting your Gmail username, which comes before the "@gmail.com" ending; or by entering your full email address. In either instance, you are able to successfully log in to your Gmail account via the Web.

Gmail POP3 Credentials
When you set up a Gmail account via POP3 within an email client, on the other hand, the rules for which credentials you use are more fixed. Namely, you must use "yourgmailname@gmail.com" as the username. If you don't, retrieving mail from the server fails, since your email client isn't able to locate a Gmail account via the username alone.

Incoming and Outgoing Mail Servers
Another essential step in correctly adding Gmail to a mail client is inputting the correcting incoming and outgoing server addresses. For the incoming email server, this is pop.gmail.com whereas outgoing mail requires stmp.gmail.com. Make sure to check the box to use "SSL Encryption" for incoming email and "Authentication" for outgoing mail.

Password Change
If you correctly input both the username and mail server information, another reason retrieving mail from Gmail can fail is if you've changed your password since you configured the account to work with the mail client. To edit the password, open the account settings interface for the Gmail account and replace the existing password with the new one.
