Several causes may underlie a computer keyboard that skips when using certain applications, such as Gmail. A skipping computer keyboard isn't always related to a specific application or even to the computer itself, so investigate the problem thoroughly to determine whether the keyboard skipping is limited to Gmail.
Computer Memory Issues
One reason computer keyboards skip using certain applications is due to a lack of system memory, which causes keystrokes to lag behind the characters or letters being on the screen. If your browser appears to be running slow when you use Gmail, close out of all applications you aren't actively using.
USB or Wireless Connection
Another cause of keyboard lag is a faulty connection, whether you use a USB or wireless keyboard. To reset the USB connection, unplug the keyboard from the computer, wait five to 10 seconds and then plug it back it. To reset a wireless connection, press the "Reset" button on the wireless hub, or unplug it from its USB port and plug it back in.
Google Talk
Gmail doesn't require a minimum system memory to operate, but it does use a Java-based chat application that requires more memory than ordinary Web pages.
