Show Preview Pane in Gmail

The Preview Pane is an experimental Gmail feature that enables you to preview emails in your inbox before you open them. In addition, you can reply to emails while navigating through the inbox. When the Preview Pane feature is enabled, the Gmail layout is similar to that used by Gmail on tablets. You can find the feature in the Labs section of Gmail. The Labs section contains experimental features that may change, break or simply disappear.

Log in to Gmail, click the "Gear" icon and select "Settings" from the menu to open the Gmail Settings page.

Click the "Labs" link to view the experimental features, and then locate the "Preview Pane" feature.

Click the "Enable" radio button next to the feature, and then click the "Save Changes" button at the bottom of the page to add the Preview Pane to Gmail. A new menu appears in the upper right corner of the Gmail page.

Click the new button and select "Vertical Split" from the menu to add the Preview Pane to the Gmail page vertically. If you want to add it horizontally, select "Horizontal Split" from the menu.

Tips & Warnings

To turn off the feature, click the "Disable" button next to "Preview Pane" in the Labs section of the Settings page.
Pressing "Enter" no longer opens the selected email because you can already see the contents of the email in the Preview Pane.
