Google's popular Gmail Internet email application displays text using the Roman alphabet by default, but the application also supports alphabets from several other languages, including Hindi. Once you activate Hindi language support, you can either type a message using a keyboard that supports Hindi's Devangari alphabet, or type Hindi phonetically using a Roman keyboard and instruct Gmail to transliterate your phonetics into Devangari script.
Log in to your Gmail account.
Click the gear-shaped icon in the upper-right corner of the program window and click "Mail Settings" in the drop-down menu.
Click the "Gmail display language" drop-down menu and select "Hindi" from the list. The entry for Hindi is written in Devangari script and is located directly below the Roman alphabet entry for Urdu.
Check the "Enable Transliteration" button to type phonetic Hindi with an English keyboard and have Gmail convert your text to the Devangari alphabet, then select "Hindi" from the "Default transliteration language" drop-down menu; it is the tenth entry on the list.
Click the "Save Changes" button at the bottom of the screen to change your Gmail language settings.
