To help make your emails easier to read and more professional looking, you can use Gmail's formatting options to align text, add color and change the font style. If you want to emphasize a word in the message, you can use the italicize feature in Gmail. You can use this option to italicize one word, blocks of text, or a variety of words throughout the message.
Log into your Gmail account.
Click "Compose Mail" to write a new email message.
Compose the message you want to send. When you want to type a word in italics, click the "Italic" icon on the toolbar below the "Subject" line.
Click the "Italic" icon to turn off italics and type in the regular font.
