Add Picture to a Gmail Account

Use the My Picture section of Gmail’s General Settings menu to add a picture to your Gmail account. This picture appears when one of your contacts hovers over your name in his Chat list, Contacts list or inbox. However, the picture is not added as your Gmail account’s profile picture. To add a profile picture to your Gmail account, use the Change Photo option from the Profile menu. Your Gmail account profile picture is your Google account profile picture and automatically becomes the default profile picture across your other Google accounts, such as Google Hangouts.

Step 1
Open your Gmail dashboard and then click the Gear icon in the upper right corner of the window. Choose Settings from the drop-down menu to open the Settings page.

Step 2
Click the General tab, and then click Select a Picture in the My Picture section to open the Upload a Picture of Yourself dialog window.

Step 3
Click the Browse button and then browse to the picture that you want to add to your account.

Step 4
Select the picture and click the Open button to upload the file. The Crop This Picture of Yourself dialog window opens.

Step 5
Select the box's handle and then drag it to resize the region covering the picture. In addition, you can drag the covered region as needed to further crop your picture. A preview of your picture appears next to the cropped version, helping for cropping your picture. Click the Apply Changes button after you finish editing to save the picture and go back to the Settings page.

Step 6
Select the radio button in the My Picture section that represents the group of people who will be able to see your picture. If you want anyone with whom you exchange email messages to see your picture, select the Visible to Everyone radio button. If you want to display your picture only to users you chat with, select the Visible Only to People I Can... radio button. The message "Your Picture Has Been Set" displays at the top of the page after the picture has been successfully uploaded to your account. In addition, your picture appears in the My Picture section and the Chat section.

Step 7
Scroll down the Settings page and then click the Save Changes button to apply the new changes.

Step 1
Sign in to your Gmail account and click the Google Profile Picture icon in the upper right corner of the window. The Google Profile Picture icon is replaced by your Google Profile picture after you complete the picture upload process. Click Change Photo from the drop-down menu box to open the Select Profile Photo window.

Step 2
Select the Upload Photos tab if it doesn't automatically open. Click the Select a Photo From Your Computer button and then browse to your picture. You can also drag your picture and drop it directly into the Select Profile Photo window. In addition, you can use the window's other tabs to select a picture. For example, click the Web Camera tab and take a profile picture of yourself using your computer's Web camera. The other two tabs are the Your Photos tab and the Photos of You tab. The Your Photos tab is the complete collection of all the photos you have uploaded to your Google account. The Photos of You tab has your tagged photos, which are the photos that you or other people have tagged with your name.

Step 3
Click the picture you want and then click the Open button to upload the file. Use a clear picture that shows your entire face so that your contacts can identify you. The Select Profile Picture window opens with your selected picture displayed.

Step 4
Select any corner of the cropping square covering your profile picture to resize the area of the picture you want to display. You can also drag the square in any direction to crop your picture. In addition, click the Right or Left arrow keys to rotate your profile picture. To add a caption for your picture, click Add Caption. When you are satisfied with the image, click the Set As Profile Picture button.
