Import Outlook Express Mail in Gmail

Having more than one email account can be cumbersome. Switching to Gmail and having all your old email imported into your Gmail account, is one way to make your email more manageable. Save time and trouble by having all of your information in one place and choose between using Outlook Express or Gmail's web interface to read your email.

Understand that Outlook Express is an email program and isn't itself an email account. Your Outlook Express program is set to connect to one or more email accounts hosted by email providers.

Find out if your archived email are stored on the email host server or on your local computer. Access to email via a web program allows you to see the same email on the web as in your Outlook Express program. Your email is probably hosted in an IMAP account on the web and you can skip to Step 4.

Determine whether your current email provider offers IMAP support. If not, sign up for an account with IMAP. Configure Outlook Express to connect to the new account. Forward all your email from your current account to the new account.

Copy all the email from your Inbox, archived email folders, and sent-mail folder into the Inbox of the IMAP account. Read your email in the IMAP account only.

Set up the Gmail Mail Fetcher to retrieve email from your IMAP account. To ensure that email is moved from your IMAP account into Gmail, leave the option called "Leave a copy of retrieved messages on the server" unchecked when setting up the Mail Fetcher.

Wait patiently as Gmail fetches email from your IMAP. Gmail fetches 200 messages every 60 to 90 minutes, or about 3600 to 4800 messages per day. If you need to read your email before Gmail finishes, use the IMAP account to read messages.

Set your original email address to forward all new email to your Gmail address and start using your Gmail account. Select either Outlook Express on your desktop computer, or Gmail's web interface, to read your Gmail email.
