With free web email services like Gmail coming to the forefront of the Internet, AOL is becoming a thing of the past. While signing up for Gmail used to require an invitation, you can now sign up whenever you want. Gmail offers unlimited storage and you can access it anywhere there's an Internet connection. So, go ahead and make the switch.
Go to Google's homepage. You'll see a series of links at the top of the page. Click on the one that says "Gmail."
Click on "Sign Up for Gmail" on that page. Explore the links below the sign up option before switching your account. You'll be more familiar with the services Gmail and Google offer.
Fill out the required information. You'll be asked for your first name, last name and what login name you'd like. Pick your password and set up your security question. Click on "I accept. Create my account" to finish the process.
Explore the Gmail Introduction screen. Once you're done exploring, you can sign in to your new Gmail account at the bottom of the page.
Use your old AOL address book to email your contacts and tell them you have a new email address. Send the email from your new email address so they can automatically put it in their address book.
Add your old AOL email address to your new Gmail account. Go to your Settings in your Gmail account and select "Add Another Email Account," to put in your old email information. This ensures that any mail sent to your AOL email address will now be sent to your new Gmail address.
Quit your AOL account. Leave yourself about an hour to do this, because AOL services are notoriously hard to cancel. The customer service representative will try to talk you into staying with them, but stay strong. If they ask for the reason you're leaving, tell them you're switching to a new email service.
