Secure Email on an iPad

Although the Mail application on the iPad doesn't have a native lock system, you can download apps that can add this element for you. You can also ensure your emails are safe on your iPad by setting a passcode and then manually locking the device or by using Google's two-step authentication, which helps lock your entire Google account. The iPad also has an setting to delete all data if a passcode is entered incorrectly 10 times.

Lock Your iPad
The "Settings" menu on your iPad enables you to define how quickly your iPad locks when left idle, with a minimum of two minutes selectable. You can manually lock your iPad by pressing the "Wake/Sleep" button at the top of the device. You can also set your iPad to require a password when coming out of lock mode, with an added option of deleting all of your stored data if the passcode is entered incorrectly 10 times.

Secure Gmail
The Secure Gmail app can be used with either one or multiple Gmail accounts. You have the option of locking your account using either a password or a dot-lock system. Once you have linked your account, you can enter your four-digit passcode to log in instead of using your password. You can configure the app to delete all the data held within an account after a number of failed sign-in attempts. As of July 2013 Secure Gmail has a four-star rating on the official iTunes store and can be purchased for $1.

Google Authenticator
Google's two-step authentication protects your entire Google account, not just your Gmail, by requiring a verification code to be entered along with your usual password when signing into your account. Google Authenticator works in conjunction with Google two-step authentication to generate verification codes on your iPad, even without an Internet connection. Generated codes only last a short period of time before expiring and being replaced by a new code. The app supports multiple accounts and can be downloaded for free from the iTunes store.

Secure Webmail
Secure Webmail can be used to access a number of email providers, including Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Windows Live, AOL and Outlook Web Access. You can set up a passcode or a dot-lock security system, as well as view attachments directly within the app. As of July 2013, Secure Webmail is available to buy for $2 from the official iTunes store, where it has a four-star user rating.

Secured eMail
Secured eMail is available in both a free and paid edition. The free version of the application can be downloaded from the Cryptzone website (link in Resources) and features many of the same tools as the paid version except that it has an account limit of 10 users. With Secured eMail installed you will be able to send and receive secured emails as well as host your own secured email service. When you open a secured email, you'll be prompted to enter your password in order to read it and access attachments.
