Chatting through your email account can save you a lot of time. If you see your contacts online as you are checking for mail, you can chat with them without having to send a message and wait for a reply. Both the new and classic Yahoo! Mail interfaces allow you to chat with online friends without leaving your inbox. There is no need to install Yahoo! Messenger on your computer, either.
New Yahoo! Mail
Sign in to Yahoo! Mail. Look for the message "Hi, [your name]" at the top of the page. You will see a status indicator to the right of this message, just before "Sign Out." Your status may read "Available," "Invisible," "Offline," "Busy" or whatever custom message you may have set.
Click the chat status you want to use. If you want everyone on your Yahoo! friends list to see you online, click "Available." If you want to appear offline but stay online, choose "Invisible." If you want to appear online to everyone but let them know you are busy, click "Busy."
Look under "Contacts" on the left navigation bar to see which of your friends is online. If you do not see a list, you may need to collapse the list first. Click the arrow if it is horizontal. The arrow will change to a vertical downward-pointing arrow and reveal your list of contacts. If anyone is online, a yellow-orange smiley face will appear next to that person's name.
Click the name of the contact you want to chat with. The chat message box will open. Type a message, and click "Send."
Yahoo! Mail Classic
Sign in to Yahoo! Mail. Look on the "Chat" pane on the lower left of the page.
Click the drop-down list next to "I am" in the "Chat" pane. Select your desired status.
Click the "Online Contacts" list below your status indicator. Click the name of a person you want to chat with.
