How to Break in Leather Basketball

The fun parts of basketball -- driving into the paint, snapping off a crisp pass, draining an off-balance shot -- they're all easier to accomplish with a good grip. But brand-new leather balls are slick; they almost feel like plastic. There is only one tried-and-true way to break them in for better handling.

The Bounce Machine
The senior vice president of Spalding, the company that supplies the NBA with leather game balls, says there's only one way to break in your basketball -- playing with it. Spalding uses a "bounce machine" that mimics the wear and tear of on-court play before shipping the balls off to each NBA team. Teams practice with the balls until the grip is game-ready. And that's exactly what you'll have to do. Bring your ball to the gym and shoot around before, after and in between games, until the grip is ready. But don't try to speed up the break-in process by dribbling the ball in the driveway. Leather balls are for indoor use only.
