How to Do Step-Back Jumper

Basketball can get fast and furious. Defenders get longer, stronger, quicker and meaner. The ball swings lightning fast on the offensive end, and you feel like you could get lost in this sea of talent. To keep up with better players, you're going to have to develop your game. Add a step-back jumper to create space and get a good look against quality defenders.

Get into a three-point stance. With your feet shoulder width apart, bend both knees and tilt your chest down to the floor. Put the ball in your "pocket," holding it with both hands at the wing of your non-shooting hip.

Dribble toward the hoop straight at your defender using your non-shooting hand. Fake an attempt to get around the defender, keeping your body in between the ball and your man. Right-handed shooters should fake going left around the defender and lefty shooters to the right.

Plant the ball of your shooting-side foot near the defender, stop your momentum and, in one movement, launch yourself away from the hoop. Use a low-flying lateral jump while staying low and athletic. Pick the ball up with both hands at the waist during the step back.

Land on the balls of both feet and collect your balance as you rise straight up for a jumper. Let the momentum of your jump travel up your body, straightening your legs and back in the process. The ball should rise into shooting position with this wave of energy.

Lock onto the rim with your eyes. Align the shooting arm's elbow with the basket so that the entire length of your shooting arm lines up down the middle of the hoop. Shoot using a nice follow-through, turning your shooting hand slightly outward during the finish.
