Take Care of Swim Cap

Swim caps break down quickly because of exposure to chlorine, salt and sun, along with constant stretching and improper care. After a swim, rinse your cap with clean water to remove debris and chemicals -- even if you've just taken a swim in fresh water. This step is necessary for all caps, whether they're made of silicone, rubber, latex, nylon or neoprene. Dry the cap with a towel to prevent it from sticking to itself and to discourage lingering moisture, which is ripe for bacterial growth. Lycra and neoprene caps benefit from hang drying. Keep holes to a minimum by removing all barrettes or clips from your hair before putting on your cap. Use your fingertips, rather than your nails, to pull it into place.

The way you store and wear your swim cap also helps preserve its longevity. Tuck a small towel inside the cap during storage or, if your cap is made of silicone, latex or rubber, sprinkle it with a bit of baby powder to keep it at its driest. Place it in an out-of-the-way compartment in your swim bag so it isn't exposed to sharp items or sunlight.
