Tips to Play Scond Base

The following article is about how to play second base on a competitive baseball team.

First step is to have a strong willpower and despite no experience, be able to try your best every time. Second base is one of the 3 leaders on a baseball team.

To play second base requires you to be incredibly versatile and agile. You have much ground to cover as well as the shortstop. To make second base easier on yourself, it helps to have quick feet and a sure glove.

Second base is a demanding position and it would help to play catch every day and have ground balls rolled to you to be fielded and thrown to first.

Second base must know how many outs, the ball and strike count, and who's on base and which base at all times. Example: Base runner on first base, 1 out, you should be in double play depth to catch the ball, touch second, and make the throw to first.

To make yourself more versatile and agile, you need to practice agility drills like wind sprints and running in place. Running long distance too is a great advantage to have over other second baseman.

Second base is usually an on-base hitter. He is not usually a power hitter. He is a contact hitter to get on base for the other hitters to drive him in. He should be consistently hitting line-drives in gaps for doubles.
