Tips on How to Repaint Surfboard

If you're tired of your surfing surfboard's color and want to get a fresh paint job for it, you don't need to hire professionals to do a custom paint job. Instead, you can have a good time and save money by painting your surfing surfboard yourself. Just choose a spray paint color you like as well as a waterproof sealant and recreate your surfing surfboard.

Lay out the painting tarp on a hard, flat surface such as a driveway or walkway.

Place the surfboard on top of the tarp.

Thoroughly sand the entire surfboard's surface to remove any bumps, scars or stuck-on dirt. Sand down any nicks or grooves as well. The board should be as smooth as possible so that the paint goes on smoothly.

Spray the entire surfboard with the primer, one side at a time. Hold the can of spray paint about 6 inches from the board as you spray in smooth, even strokes. Allow the first side to dry for one hour before turning over the board to spray the other side. Allow the other side to dry for one hour as well.

Respray the surfboard with the spray paint primer just as you did before. Again allow one hour for each side to dry.

Using the spray paint, completely spray one side of the surfboard. Hold the can approximately 6 inches from the board and spray in slow, even strokes. Allow the first side to dry for 30 minutes before turning the board over and spraying the other side. Cover the entire board thoroughly and evenly.

Repeat this process at least two more times or more if you want a deeper, richer color. Always allow 30 minutes for each side of the board to dry before turning it over.

Using the clear sealant, spray the surfboard in the same manner in which you applied the primer and the paint. Allow one hour for the first side to dry before turning over the surfboard and spraying the other side.

Repeat this step two more times, making sure to cover the surfboard completely with each spray coating and allowing one hour for each side to dry before turning over the board.

Remove the painting tarp and take the board out for a ride.
