Mavericks may have gnarlier surf, but surfing, according to just about everybody, originated in Polynesia, probably in the Society Islands, a group of South Pacific islands that includes Tahiti and Papeete. While the sport might not have originated in Hawaii, its association with Hawaii's history is unquestionable. Hawaiian Encyclopedia.com opines that surfing probably found a home in Hawaii at least 500 years ago, because some Hawaiian surfing chants date back that far.
Petroglyphs and Big Boards
Lava rock pictures, called petroglyphs, on the north shore of the island of Oahu that predate Capt. surfing's royal devotees included most Hawaiian chiefs, including King Kamahameha; however, surfing was, as it is today, an egalitarian sport. While royalty enjoyed a long board -- up to 24 feet in length -- made from more buoyant wood, lesser mortals rode boards that averaged half that length, double the length of today's shortest boards.
