Creating Flyer in Adobe Photoshop CS3

You can create almost any type of flyer you need using Photoshop CS3. Most flyers are used to make a quick impact on the reader, and to convey a short message. Use eye-catching images to attract attention. Use large, bold fonts in the text so that your message can be read quickly. Most people scan a flyer, picking up key words, before deciding whether or not to read it. A good flyer should be memorable even to the people who decide not to read every word.

Creating the Flyer Document
Step 1
Design your flyer and hone the message you want to convey before opening Photoshop. Open your mailbox, a daily newspaper, or sort through your recycling box to look at other flyers. Make mental notes of what impresses you and what does not. Decide whether your flyer will be printed in color or in black and white. Decide if your flyer will be printed on white paper or color. These will affect your choices in what type of pictures to use and your choice in font colors. Sketch your design on paper.

Step 2
Launch Photoshop on your computer. Click the "File" menu and select "New." Decide on the size of your flyer and the page orientation. Most flyers are on standard 8.5-by-11 inch paper. Click the menu that says "Pixels" and change it to "Inches," then type in the size.

Step 3
Click the "Window" menu, then click "Tools" if you do not see the Tools palette. Click "Layers" in the same menu if you do not see the Layers palette. You will need them both to work on the flyer.

Inserting Images
Step 1
Click the "File" menu and select "Place." Navigate to an image on your computer, then double-click it. The image will be placed in the document as a new layer.

Step 2
Move the image into position by clicking it with the mouse and dragging it across the screen. Release the mouse button.

Step 3
Resize or rotate the image by clicking any corner, then it dragging the mouse.

Step 4
Double-click the image when you are satisfied with its size and orientation.

Step 5
Add additional images as needed. Each item you add to the document occupies a separate layer. Click the image or text box you want to move or edit in the Layers palette before trying to work on it. To move an image or text box above or below another, click the "Layers" menu, then select "Arrange." The options provided will depend on the layer's position on the document.

Inserting Text
Step 1
Click the "Text Tool" in the "Tools Palette." The cursor will change and the text Options palette will appear at the top of the screen.

Step 2
Drag the cursor across the screen where you would like text to appear. This will create a text box. Begin typing. You can also paste text you have copied from another document by clicking on the box and press "Ctrl-V" to paste.

Step 3
Highlight the text by dragging the mouse across it. Adjust the font style and size in the text Options palette. To change the color, click the color in the Options palette. A new window will open where you can click on the color you want.

Step 4
Click the "Move Tool" in the "Tools Palette" to move the text box. Click on the text and drag it with your mouse.

Step 5
Add additional text boxes as needed. Use the Layers palette to move from one text box to another, or click the text on the document to select that layer.

Saving and Printing
Step 1
Review your flyer before printing it. Use the Zoom in the bottom corner of the document window to zoom in and out. This will let you see what it looks like from a distance, as well as close up.

Step 2
Save your flyer by clicking the "File" menu and selecting "Save." Type a name for the document in the text field. Make sure the selected format is a "Photoshop" document so you can make changes to it later.

Step 3
Save copies of your flyer in PDF format for faster printing and electronic distribution. Click the "File" menu and select "Save As." Select "Photoshop PDF" in the Format menu. The Save Adobe PDF dialog box opens.

Step 4
Click the "Adobe PDF Preset" menu to select the type of PDF you need. Select "High Quality Print" for a PDF to print on a desktop printer. Select "Smallest File Size" to email the flyer to clients or to upload it to a website for download. If you are sending the PDF to a commercial printer, they will request either a "Press Quality," or a "PDF/X-compliant" PDF.

Step 5
Click "Output" in the left menu of the Save Adobe PDF dialog box to specify color management and PDF/X options for printing. When you are satisfied with your choices, click the "Save" button.

Step 6
Reopen the original PDF you saved in Step One to create a new PDF with different options. Save it with a different name so you do not write over the first PDF you made.

Step 7
Print the flyer to your own desktop printer by clicking the "File" menu and selecting "Print."
