Building your own wooden bench seat is a simple project for beginning woodworkers to polish their woodworking tools. First, the project doesn’t require you to have a lot of expensive woodworking equipment and will therefore be easy on your pocket. Second, a wooden bench seat doesn’t have to be pretty and so it doesn’t require you to add a lot of detail or put a lot of care into the aesthetics of the project. Finally, the bench seat is a useful project from which you’ll at least have something to sit on when you’re done.
Step 1
Cut two 1-inch thick pinewood blocks to measure 4 feet long by 6 inches wide using a table saw.
Step 2
Cut two 1-inch thick pinewood blocks to measure 1-foot long by 6-inches wide.
Step 3
Cut one 1-inch thick pinewood block to measure 4 feet 2 inches long by 6 inches wide.
Step 4
Cut one 1/4-inch thick plywood board to measure 5 feet long by 2 feet wide.
Step 5
Cut two 1/4-inch thick plywood boards to measure 2 feet long by 2 feet wide.
Step 6
Cut one 1/4-inch thick plywood board to measure 6 inches square.
Step 7
Cut the 6-inch square plywood board across the middle from one corner to the next to create two right triangles with two 6-inch sides each.
Step 8
Create a wooden frame that is 4 feet 2 inches long by 6 inches tall, by 1 foot deep in order to create a base frame for the bench seat. Drill two 2-inch screws into each corner of the frame to attach the pieces together.
Step 9
Attach the 5-foot by 2-foot plywood board to the top of the base frame to create the seat for the bench seat. The seat should stick out one inch on all sides from the base frame. Use a staple gun and wood glue to attach the pieces together. Apply the wood glue to the 1-inch thickness of the base frame and drive the staples from the top of the seat down into the frame.
Step 10
Flip the base frame upside-down so that the seat is now on the bottom of the frame, and then attach the two 2-foot square plywood boards to the base frame and seat to create the legs of the bench seat. The square boards should be attached perpendicularly to the seat. Attach the pieces using wood glue and a staple gun. Apply the wood glue to the 1-foot by 6-inch faces of the base frame and drive the staples from the outside of the legs into the base frame.
Step 11
Attach the two right triangles to the base frame and legs to create the corner braces of the bench seat. The corner braces should fit in the 90-degree angled corner created by the seat and the legs. Attach the pieces using wood glue and a staple gun. Apply the wood glue to the 4-foot, 2-inch by 6-inch faces of the frame and drive the staples from the outside of the corner braces into the base frame.
Step 12
Attach the 4-foot-2-inch by 6-inch by 1-inch pinewood block to the legs to create the brace of the bench seat. The 4-foot-2-inch by 6-inch faces of the block should be parallel to the seat and perpendicular to the legs. The long faces of the block should be 8 1/2 inches from the base frame and 8 1/2 inches from the farthest edge of the legs. Attach the pieces by drilling two 1-inch screws from the outside of the legs into the 1-inch thickness of the block. There should be one screw on each corner of the block.
Step 13
Smooth down all the surfaces of the bench seat using different grades of sandpaper and then apply wood stain to protect the wood. The wood stain should be applied using a brush.
Step 14
Flip the bench seat right-side-up and place it wherever you prefer.

Step 10

The square boards should be attached perpendicularly to the seat. Attach the pieces using wood glue and a staple gun. Apply the wood glue to the 1-foot by 6-inch faces of the base frame and drive the staples from the outside of the legs into the base frame.
Step 11
Attach the two right triangles to the base frame and legs to create the corner braces of the bench seat. The corner braces should fit in the 90-degree angled corner created by the seat and the legs.
