Narrow Vs. Wide Decks for Skateboards

Skate decks started out as a flat piece of wood with roller-skateboarding wheels attached. They have changed tremendously over the last 50 years. The manufacturing precision of modern skate decks allows riders to control every minor movement, with the sizes of the decks varying from narrow to wide. If you are having trouble choosing the proper width for the deck of your skates, you must first decide what type of rider you are.

Narrow
The average skate deck is between 7.25 inches and 8.5 inches, but sizes also exceed this number. If freestyle is your skating style, a narrow deck might be the right choice for you. It will allow you to enjoy skating on the street, performing flip tricks and grinding in tight areas. A narrow skate deck allows maximum pop as your feet dangle over the edges of the concave board.

Wide
Skate decks that measure 8 inches or more in width tend to work well for ramp skaters. Wide decks also match perfectly with wider trucks, or axles, to provide a spread-out wheelbase. Riders who prefer turning and cutting on their decks rather than performing flip tricks will make great use of these boards.

Trucks
The width of the trucks, or axles, determines how well a deck can turn on any surface. While a truck that measures 8 inches in width may be paired with a slimmer deck, it is much easier to control a deck with an appropriately paired set of trucks. As such, the width of the trucks work to improve the maneuverability of the deck itself. Wider trucks allow riders to make sharp turns and great use of ramps, while narrow-designed trucks work better in straight lines and for performing land-based tricks.

Height
While the width between narrow and wide skate decks is not tremendous, the variance will be felt by the rider. As such, the rider's height is a determining factor when choosing the right width. A smaller skater with small feet will enjoy the use of narrow decks and may find that a wider deck poses a control problem, no matter what the terrain may be. A taller skater with larger feet will make great use of a wide deck, and boards that measure 8 inches or more are recommended.
