How to Convert The Battery-Operated Devices

Battery-operated devices will eventually discharge the batteries that are installed inside the device. If the battery-operated device is used for several years, the cost of battery replacement greatly outweighs the cost to plug a similar device into an electrical outlet. If a battery-operated device will end up in one place for most of its useful lifetime, it may be more cost effective to convert the device to plug into a wall outlet. Battery-operated devices require direct electrical current. Therefore, if a battery-operated device is to be converted to a plug-in device, a DC power adapter is required.

Open and remove the battery cover on the battery-operated device. Drill a hole through the middle of the cover.

Cut the tip off the DC adapter. Pull apart the wire ends until there is a six-inch separation between them. Remove half an inch of insulating material from each wire end.

Turn on the multimeter and set the measurement scale to "Volts DC." Place the red probe on one of the adapter's stripped wire ends. Place the black probe on the remaining end. Plug the adapter into the wall outlet. If the multimeter shows a negative voltage reading (such as "-3V"), mark the adapter wire connected to the red probe with the permanent marker. If the multimeter shows a positive reading (such as "3V"), mark the adapter wire connected to the black probe. Unplug the adapter from the wall outlet and disconnect the probes from the adapter wires.

Route the wire ends of the adapter through the hole in the battery cover. Place the ring terminal over the end of the marked wire and solder the wire to the terminal.

Remove the top screw on the alligator clip. Place this screw through the hole in the ring terminal and tighten the screw into the alligator clip until the screw holds the ring terminal firmly against the clip.

Attach the alligator clip to the battery compartment spring terminal. Solder the remaining adapter wire to the flat battery terminal opposite the spring terminal.

Replace the battery cover. Plug the DC adapter into the wall socket and turn on the device.
