Also known as Blackjack, 21 is a card game in which players attempt to achieve the highest score without exceeding 21 points. While relatively simple to play, the rules of 21 may vary depending on where and who you are playing. To ensure a fair game, consult the facility or other players to determine the rules of play.
Two Players
Select a player to act as dealer and instruct him to shuffle the cards.
Deal two cards face-down to each player.
Allow the non-dealing player to decide whether or not he would like another card. Signal for another card by saying "hit me." Refuse an additional card by saying you will "stand." Deal additional cards so they are not visible to opponents.
Allow the dealer to decide whether he would like another card.
Continue taking turns deciding whether to hit or stand. A player that exceeds 21 points "busts" and the other player wins.
Once both players decide to stand, take turns revealing the hands and scores. The player closest to or at 21 wins. If each player has the same point total, neither player wins.
More Than Two Players
Select a player to act as dealer. Instruct the dealer to shuffle the cards.
Deal two cards to each player, including the dealer. Deal the players' cards so they are visible to the entire table. Deal the dealer's cards so one is visible to the table and one is not.
Start with the player directly to the dealer's left and move clockwise around the circle. Allow each player, except the dealer, an opportunity to hit or stand. Continue this process until all players have either busted or decided to stand.
Instruct the dealer to turn over his hidden card. Instruct the dealer to decide whether to hit or stand. The dealer must hit if his total is less than 17. If the dealer busts, all remaining players win.
Calculate the dealer's hand and determine the winner. Any players that are closer to 21 than the dealer's total win. Any players who are further from 21 than the dealer's total lose. Any players that are equal with the dealer tie.
