How to Play 16 Domino Game

Dominoes are small rectangular blocks used to play a number of different games. Each block is divided in half, with each half containing markings indicating numbers from zero to six, or zero to twelve. Sixteen Domino, also known as Mexican Train, or simply Train, is a common domino game using "Double Twelve" dominoes, which contain zero to twelve markings on each half of each domino.

Deal the dominoes. Each player receives a number of dominoes, facedown. Up to 4 players receive 15 each. Five or 6 players take 12 each, and 7 or 8 players take 10 each. The remaining dominoes are left face down in the center of the table. This pile is called the boneyard.

Arrange the dominoes. Each player arranges his dominoes so that they are standing on an edge, facing the player so that the other players cannot see their value.

Determine who will lay the first domino. Player with the 12-12 domino (domino with 12 dots on each end) begins. If no one has this piece, players take turns drawing from boneyard until someone draws the 12-12.

Begin the game. The player with the 12-12 places it face up on the table.

Create a domino train. Each player creates her own train. This begins with the player who has played the 12-12. He continues to place dominoes next to the 12-12, with sides with like number of dots touching. His first play must be a domino with 12 dots on one side to play off the 12-12. If, for example, a 12-4 is played, the 12 would be touching the 12-12, and the next domino to be played must have a 4 on one side, touching the other 4.

Continue play around the table clockwise, with each player playing as many pieces as he is able to, starting off of the 12-12. For the first round of turns only, players play as many pieces as they can.

Continue the next round. For the second round of turns, players are permitted to play only one domino on each turn, unless they play a double (domino with the same number of dots on each side). If a double is played, you must play a second domino. If the player is unable to play a second domino, the following player must play a double on his turn, called "satisfying the double." If he is unable to, play goes around the table until a player can satisfy the double.

Play until a player is unable to. If a player is unable to play, he draws a domino from the boneyard, and plays it if possible. If he is still unable to play after drawing, he places his marker on the train. Another player may now play on that marker if he wishes, removing the marker and replacing with a sufficiently matching domino.

Continue until one player has played all of his dominoes, or until no one is able to make a play.

Score the total of the dots on the remaining dominoes as penalty points for all players with remaining dominoes.

Play 13 games. The player with the lowest score is the winner.
