Pinochle is a trick-taking card game designed for two to four players. If you choose to play with more than four players, you must use a second playing deck. The playing deck consists of two of each 9, 10, jack, queen, king, and ace, for a total of 48 cards. The ace card is considered the highest card in the game. Ranking is as follows: ace,10, king, queen, jack, and then 9. Players work in teams of two. The goal of the game is to be the first team to reach a predetermined amount of points.
Grab your Pinochle deck. If you do not have a Pinochle deck, you can create one by combining the 9s, 10s, jacks, queens, kings, and aces of two poker decks.
Select a dealer and create teams. Determine a winning amount of points. You may wish to determine a winner after a team reaches 1,500 or 2,000 points.
Shuffle the cards and deal 12 cards to each player, dealing clockwise. Any remaining cards belong to the dealer.
Pick up and sort your cards. Determine your bid by adding up the point value of certain card combinations in your hand. These combinations are called melds.
Melds and their point values are as followed:
Runs (a series of cards in the trump suit):
Bare Run = 150 points
-Ace, ten, king, queen, jack
Run with Extra King = 190 points
-Ace, ten, king, king, queen, jack
Run with Extra Queen = 190 points
-Ace, ten, king, queen, queen, jack
Run with Extra Marriage = 230 points
-Ace, ten, king, king, queen, queen, jack
Double Run = 1500 points
-2 of each ace, ten, king, queen, jack
Nine Of Trump (known as the deece) = 10 points
Marriages (king and queen of the same suit):
Royal Marriages = 40 points
-King and queen of trump
Common Marriage = 20 points
-King and queen of non-trump
Pinochle (the jack of diamonds and queen of spades):
Single Pinochle = 40 points
-One jack of diamonds and one queen of spades
Double Pinochle = 3000 points
-Both jacks of diamonds and queens of spades
Arounds (one or two of each suit):
Aces
-One of each suit = 100 points
-Two of each suit = 1000 points
Kings
-One of each suit = 80 points
-Two of each suit = 800 points
Queens
-One of each suit = 60 points
-Two of each suit = 600 points
Jacks
-One of each suit = 40 points
-Two of each suit = 400 points
Place your bid. The person to the left of the dealer places the initial bid. Bids are increased in increments of 10 points. You may pass if you cannot beat the highest bid. The highest bidder has the right to name the trump, receive cards from his or her partner, and lead the first trick.
Receive cards from your partner. If you placed the winning bid, call trump and receive four cards from your partner. You must receive exactly four cards, no more and no less. Discard four cards from your hand and give them to your partner.
Lay down your meld and determine your points. Write your points down on a score pad. Your bid must be within 250 points of your meld points in order to meet your bid. If your bid is 250 points or less from your bid, you can continue playing the hand. If your bid is more than 250 points, your team is set, thus losing the amount of your bid.
Pick up your meld and prepare to take tricks. The top bidder plays a card. It is your goal to beat that card with a higher card, thus taking the trick. If another player duplicates the winning card, the person who played the card first takes the trick. You must follow suit when playing out the hands. The first card determines the suit. If you do not have a card of the same suit you may throw a trump card or throw an off card. Trump cards always beat regular suit cards.
Count your tricks and add your points. Each Ace, ten and king are worth 10 points. Give yourself an additional 10 points if you won the final trick. The most points you can receive during this round is 250 points. Add this amount to the amount of your team's previous score. If your team did not make your bid, you must subtract the amount of the bid from your total score.
Continue the game until a team reaches the set amount of points for the game.
