The Mexican Train Game Rules

Dominoes are a great gaming tool. There are dozens of games possible using a set of dominoes, each with their own rules and strategies. "Mexican Train" is one of these games. It is one of the most widely played domino games. It requires lots of careful planning and a little bit of luck to come out ahead. Understanding the rules will help you play this game anytime.

Preparation
Use a set of double 12 dominoes for this game. Remove the double 12 from the set. Place the dominoes face down on the table. Shuffle them around the table for a few moments. Players then take turns drawing a certain number of dominoes based on how many people are playing. Two and three players receive 16, four receive 15, five receive 14, six gets 12, seven gets ten and eight gets nine. Players should look at their dominoes, but keep them hidden from the rest of the players. Place the rest of the dominoes off to the side in the "train yards." This is the drawing pile during the game. Place the double 12 in the center of the table. Choose a starting player by drawing lots, flipping coins or any other sort of random luck-based game. Starting players should rotate clockwise between rounds.

Playing
The starting player must place a domino that matches the starting domino. The game starts with a double 12, so he must play a domino with a 12. The starting domino decreases by one each round. For example, the second round would start with double 11 and the third with double 10 and so on until double zero. Once a domino has been placed, it creates a "train." The player can create a personal train or the "Mexican train." This train can be played on by any player that has a matching domino. It's used by players who can't play on their own train. The personal train can only be played on by that player. Once a player has played a domino, the player clockwise to him plays his domino. Play continues in this manner until a player runs out of dominoes. Players who can't play during their turn must draw a tile from the "train yard." If they can't play on any train, they must place a marker on the end of their personal train. Pennies work great as markers. A marker on a train means any player can play on your train. Remove the marker once you play on your personal train. Players can no longer play on your train. Playing a double domino is a special occasion. The double tile will be placed sideways and not end to end. You must then place another domino. This second domino can be played on any eligible train, but cannot be another double. Playing doubles gives you a perfect chance to get rid of extra dominoes. Players must always play a domino if it is possible. Holding dominoes for strategic reasons by refusing to play them is forbidden.

Scoring and Winning
After a player goes out, the rest of the players count their score. Counting the dots on their remaining dominoes indicates their score. Players do not want points in this game. Play continues until the double zero round is over. Players tally up all their points. The winner is the player with the least amount of points.
