Competition and Choices for a Small Business Owner

We live in a democratic society. A society that allows us to express ourselves, preferably in a non violent and diplomatic way. Where we choose to get up and go to work or claim a sick day, we choose to follow our own religion. We also choose to own and operate our own business in whatever form, be it a home based business or with a shop front. These are choices that we are allowed in our society. When this choice is infringed upon, then boundaries are crossed and freedom is restricted. As a small business owner you should have the choice to promote your business legally and enjoy the competitive nature that your business creates.

Healthy competition for the small business owner is always a good thing because it helps your business to develop and grow. But when the scales of this competition is unfairly tipped by having a large multinational company move into your area then it is no longer healthy, but more so a threat to your existence. Large multinational companies do have some benefits for the economy. They do create employment, they do offer consumers a larger variety of products, and they can create large shopping centres that consumers can spend all day in and lose track of time. Governments do not seem to be doing much to protect the small business owner, and restricting the multinational to balance the competition and give the small business owner ago.

Therefore the Small business owner either closes shop or tries to find alternatives to compete against this type of competition. Because the large multinationals have the money and muscle to achieve a lot of what they want they tend to dictate what is going to happen in your area. But you as a small business owner also have alternatives and the power to compete against this type of threat. The internet is one of those powerful tools that can be used to help your business to succeed and develop. The structure of your business will need to change but you will still own and operate your own business but with a lot more flexibility. Take for example a hardware store if you once owned a small hardware store selling your goods, and a large multinational hardware store moved into your area, then you could still compete with this store but the structure of your business would have to change. One scenario could be that you could still have a store front, but expand your network to sell on the internet, you could create a syndicate with other business owners and buy directly from the manufacturer this would give you a increased negotiating abilities to purchase products at a cheaper and more cost effective price, or to meet the manufacturers minimum purchase requirements. There are creative ways to compete in this situation, just look at your business structure and don't be afraid to try new alternatives.

In today's business world it is very important your business is recognised by your customers. You as a small business owner will still have the power to compete against large companies to buy and sell your products, the only thing that has changed is the way that you approach this challenge, because competition has changed considerably and is a lot more undiplomatic than what it was once.
