When you send a private message on Facebook, you are not limited to using text alone. You can, for example, attach a picture or even a video to the message. Another way to go beyond just words is to include smileys, also known as emoticons. Facebook recognizes a variety of strings of characters and turns them into emoticons ranging from a basic smiley face to a shark emerging from the water. Include these smileys in your messages to help clarify your tone or just to liven things up.
Click the "Messages" icon, which looks like two overlapping speech bubbles, near the top left corner of Facebook. Click "Send a New Message."
Begin typing a friend's name into the "To" field in the "New Message" window. When your friend appears in the list of options below this field, click it to select that friend as the recipient of the message.
Begin writing the message as normal. Stop when you reach the point where you wish to include a smiley.
Type the characters associated with the smiley you wish to add to your message. Some examples include ":-)" for a basic smiley face, ":-(" for a frowning or sad face, ";-)" for a winking face, "(^^^)" for a shark, ":'(" for a crying face and "<3" for a heart. Do not include the quotation marks for any of these symbols.
Continue composing your message. Don't worry about the fact that the smiley has not appeared in place of the characters you typed. For now, you should still just see the characters that represent the smiley.
Click the blue "Send" button to send the message. When your friend receives it, the characters you typed to create smileys turned into actual smileys.
