Facebook lets you change your notification settings for dozens of activity types. You can opt to send those notifications to your email address or mobile phone, as well as view the notifications within the Facebook website itself. If you are having trouble changing your notifications, you can make a few adjustments to your account settings to uncover the options.
Accessing Facebook Notification Settings
Facebook sometimes changes its account settings interface, forcing users to relearn how to make changes. As of September 2011, all Facebook notification settings are located in the account settings screen. To get there, click the "Account" drop-down box in the upper right corner and select "Account Settings," and then click "Notifications" in the left navigation menu.
Enabling and Disabling Summary Email Notifications
In September 2011, Facebook activated summary emails of Facebook activity. Instead of receiving notifications for every activity, you get a periodic summary of interactions. This feature is turned on by default, preventing you from being able to change your Facebook notifications. To turn this off, click to deselect the "Email Frequency" check box at the top of the notifications page of your account settings.
Displaying and Changing App Notification Settings
App notification settings are hidden behind their names while viewing the "All Notifications" area of your notifications screen in your account settings. Click any one of the listed apps. This expands all of the notification options for that app. Click to select or deselect the boxes below the envelope icon (email) and phone icon (mobile) to change the settings for that app. Repeat this for all apps you want to customize.

If your mobile phone is not registered with your Facebook account, you will not see any check boxes below the phone icon in your notification settings and thus you cannot change those settings. To register your mobile phone, click the "Mobile" tab in the left navigation menu of your account settings. Click the "Add a Phone" button. Facebook walks you through the process of registering your mobile phone. When that is complete, check boxes appear below the phone icon for you to select or deselect as desired.
