Facial Expressions on Face Book

Whatever you say on Facebook, adding an appropriate facial expression can make your message stronger. Save yourself the trouble of spelling out complex emoticons and smileys. Use Facebook's built-in graphic emoticons or special characters hidden in your keyboard. Remember to use such symbols sparingly.

Overview
Facebook recognizes dozens of emoticons that you can use to convey emotion or mood. These emoticons include smileys and other facial expressions, symbols and creatures, such as a penguin or shark. Besides emoticons, Facebook also accepts special characters known as "alt codes" in Windows personal computers. Emoticons and symbols can be used in chat, statuses and private messages.

Emoticons
Facebook does not have an emoticons menu or toolbar that you can choose a smiley from. To insert an emoticon, you must know the correct keyboard shortcut for the expression you want to display. An emoticon may have more than one acceptable shortcut. For example, you can invoke a smiley with either a :-) or :). The Facebook help section offers a partial list of emoticons and their formulas. Type the formula in a message, status update or chat box, and press "Enter" to share it.

Alt Codes
Alt codes are special characters that you can use in Windows computers, besides the standard keyboard characters. A user inserts an alt code symbol by holding down the "Alt" key and pressing the code for that symbol in the numeric keypad. To use alt codes in Facebook, make sure the numeric keypad light is on. If not, press "Num Lock" to turn it on. Press the "Alt" key and hit "1" for a white smiley or "2" for a black smiley. Other symbols you might want to try are card suits, arrows and planetary glyphs. Refer to an alt codes list to find the code for the symbols you need to use.

Character Map
If you do not know the alt code of a special character, or if it is difficult to type the alt code, use Windows' Character Map. Open the Start menu, click "All Programs," click "Accessories," click "System Tools" and launch Character Map. Choose Arial or another common font, check "Advanced View," select "Unicode" as the character set and select "Unicode Subrange" as the group. Choose "Symbols & Dingbats" from the small group window. Click a smiley face, click "Select" and then click "Copy." Go to your Facebook account and press "Ctrl+V" where you want to insert the smiley. Note that Character Map is unavailable for Macs; instead use the Keyboard Viewer.
