How to Get Organic Web Traffic

Web traffic has a direct impact on the success of any website project. Understanding the types of traffic your site is getting can help you to make adjustments either to your marketing efforts or the site itself, maximizing on the visitors your site receives. You can use various types of paid Internet advertising and marketing to drive traffic to a site, but sometimes the most valuable traffic is from free links.

Listings
Organic Web traffic comes from any unpaid listings your site appears in. This includes the unpaid listings for your site pages in search engines, directories and guides. Search engines are the main source type for organic traffic. If someone types a phrase or word into a search engine, then clicks a link to your site in the resulting page, that is organic traffic. The main search engines include Google, Yahoo!, Bing and MSN, all of which may be sending traffic to your site.

Analysis
Many Web hosts provide traffic analysis tools that you can normally access through the Web browser. These tools display the number of visits your site has received over a set period, as well as where those visitors have come from. Many webmasters also opt to use the free Google Analytics tool, which provides detailed statistics on all aspects of website traffic. In addition to seeing how much of your site traffic is from search engines, it can be useful to see which keywords people are searching for before ending up at your website pages.

SERPs
SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) are the listings users see when they perform a search in a search engine. Most organic traffic occurs when people click the links in these pages. The sites appearing closest to the top of the listings receive the most traffic from them. Users are more likely to click the links appearing first or nearest the top. Website administrators and marketers therefore strive to create sites that will perform well in the SERP listings, as this can have a dramatic impact on traffic.

SEO
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the practice of maximizing site performance in search engines. Many companies offer paid SEO services, but some site owners carry out SEO activities themselves. SEO can involve making alterations to the content of a site, tailoring the text within its pages to effectively target the search keywords a site is listed for. The search engine algorithms are extremely complex and in some cases shrouded in mystery, so it can be difficult to determine which SEO tactics are likely to be most successful. Building links to your site from other websites is another common SEO technique, as sites with lots of quality links tend to rank higher within the SERPs.
