Facebook has added a plethora of features since the website first launched. For instance, a "Chat" sidebar, which is similar to any other instant messenger program, now appears every time you log in. This sidebar may, however, load against your will, alerting everyone on your friends list that you have signed on whether you like it or not. Facebook does include a feature to avoid this unwanted scenario, allowing you to appear offline.
Log in to Facebook. Click the minimized "Chat" tab at the bottom right corner to maximize the Chat sidebar, if necessary.
Click the gray flower-shaped icon at the bottom of the Chat sidebar. Notice the check mark next to "Available to Chat."
Click "Available to Chat." The check mark disappears, indicating that you have gone offline. A "You are unavailable to chat" message appears, keeping others from knowing that you are online.
