Facebook is the largest social networking community on the Web, claiming over 750 million users worldwide. If you have a Facebook account, you can communicate with your friends on Facebook in a variety of ways. One handy tool at your disposal is an instant messaging utility known as "Facebook Chat." You can use this application to send messages directly to friends who are online. If you find it annoying to receive Facebook Chat messages when you log in to your account, you can disable this feature and "go offline" so that no one will be able to message you.
Open your browser and navigate to Facebook.com.
Input your login credentials in the upper right corner of the page and click the "Login" button.
Click the "Chat" button, in the lower right corner of the page. A window will expand with a list of all of your Facebook friends who are presently online.
Click the "Gear" icon in the upper right corner of the Chat window. A drop-down menu will appear.
Click the "Available to Chat" option to remove the check mark. Others will no longer be able to instant message you on Facebook.
