The Kindle Fire uses an operating system based on Google's Android OS and optimized for the large tablet screen. Google programs aren't available from the Amazon Appstore on your Kindle Fire, but you can install them manually by downloading the necessary files through your Web browser. When you purchase a Kindle Fire, you don't have root access to the file system under the user interface, and you don't need that level of access to install Google Maps. You can use Google Maps with the plain, factory installation of Android on your Kindle Fire.
