Facebook notifications keep you informed when someone initiates communication with you on the site. The notifications are delivered primarily via email, and sometimes text message, unless you disable the service. Facebook also sends an email each week informing you of the upcoming birthdays of your friends. If the emails become more pesky than they are helpful, simply disable the notifications regarding birthdays. Stopping emails about birthdays will not stop other notifications.
