Craft Butterfly out of Clothing Shoulder Pads

Show off what a recycling savvy mama you can be while creating custom decorations for your youngster’s room from a pair of old shoulder pads or using them to make springtime-themed butterfly crafts at her next birthday party. When you have sewn the butterflies together, let your child or her party group help to personalize them by embellishing the winged creatures with metallic paint, imitation gemstones or glitter, and then suspend them in the window to sparkle in the sunshine.

Lay one of the shoulder pads on your work surface. Fold the long, straight edge over and sew a few stitches in the center of the folded edge to hold it in place while allowing the edges of the fold to stand up a little.

Lay the second shoulder pad on your work surface and pinch the center. Sew through the center to gather the fabric and create two butterfly wings (one on either side of the pinched center).

Place the second shoulder pad on top of the first, just behind the folded edge. Pin the two layers together. Sew through the layers to join them and create a layered butterfly.

Cut a chenille stick in half and bend one end of each to make the ends of the butterfly’s antennae. Pin the opposite end of the chenille sticks to the center of the butterfly, at the folded edge of the bottom layer. Tuck the ends in between the two layers to hide the chenille stick ends. Sew the chenille stick ends in place from the underside of the butterfly.

Cut a long piece of fishing line or invisible thread and tie the ends in a knot. Pin the knot to the butterfly just behind the antennae and sew the thread to the butterfly. Now you can hang up the butterfly from the invisible thread so it will look like it’s suspended in midair.
