How to Have Your Gmail Account

A Gmail account can be set up with only a few pieces of information, including your name, age and location. Creating an account requires adherence to Google's Terms of Service, which indicate that you must continue to act within the boundaries of the law.

Personal Details
When creating a Gmail account, you will be required to enter your full name, gender, current location and birth date. Gmail accounts will be assigned only to users aged 13 and above. Age requirements vary outside of the U.S. When selecting a gender, you will be able to choose between male, female and other. You're required to designate a user ID and a password for your account. You'll also have the option of entering your phone number.

Terms of Service
When signing up for a Gmail account, you must agree to Google's Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. These conditions stipulate that you can't use your account to send mail in bulk or engage in illegal or abusive behavior. Breaches of Google's Terms of Service include harassment, defamatory comments and use of obscene material. Google may delete your account if it deems you to have violated these conditions.

Supported Browsers
Gmail is supported on Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari. Google provides support only for the current and previous version of each Web browser on a rolling basis. Each time a browser is updated, Google will stop providing support for a previous edition, for example, upon the release of Firefox 22, Google stopped support for Firefox 20. While Gmail may still run on unsupported browsers, ensure your selected browser is fully up to date to get the most out of Gmail.

Extra Features
Gmail offers extra features alongside its email client, such as instant messaging and video chatting. Some of these features require you to download additional plugins for them to work; for example, if you would like to have a video chat with a friend in your Gmail contacts list, you'll be required to download the Google Hangouts plugin beforehand. Other add-ons can be found in the Labs tab in Gmail's Settings menu.
