Eliminating the need to open each message in your inbox to find out what it is about can help you more efficiently manage your email. Gmail enables you to set up a preview pane that automatically displays the first line of each message in your inbox. Activating the preview pane requires using Gmail’s Labs, which enables you to install add-ons for your inbox. You can toggle back and forth between normal and preview mode at any time.
Click the “Options” button, which has a gear icon on it, and select “Settings” from the drop-down menu.
Click the “Labs” tab and enter “Preview Pane” into the search field. Gmail automatically displays search results.
Locate Preview Pane within the list of results and click the corresponding “Enable” radial button. Click “Save Changes.”
Click the “Inbox” label in the vertical navigation to return to your inbox.
Click the “Toggle Split Pane Mode” button to split the inbox screen so that a preview line is visible for each message. Click the “Toggle Split Pane Mode” button again to return to non-preview mode.
Tips & Warnings
Gmail Labs are experimental add-ons that may malfunction or be removed by Google at any time. To turn a Lab feature off, select the corresponding “Disable” button within the Labs tab. If Lab features prevent your inbox from loading, use the special URL provided by Gmail (see Resources) to access you inbox instead of the regular Gmail URL. Doing so temporarily disables all Labs.
