A proxy server is a computer that acts as a go-between between the local computer you're using and the Internet. When you browse the Web using a proxy server, the computer you're using does not connect directly to the Internet. Instead, it connects to the proxy server. You direct the proxy server to the websites you want to visit, and it's the proxy which connects to the Internet to retrieve the information, which it then passes back to your computer. While Yahoo does not have an official public proxy server, there is a way to use Yahoo as a proxy.

Look up the computer's current IP address by going to the "WhatIsMyIPAddress" website. Make a note of the computer's actual IP address.

Go to the Yahoo! home Web page.

Type "babelfish" in the "Search" box. Press "Enter" or click the "Search" button on the Web page. The Yahoo! Babel Fish website should appear at the top of the search results. Click on the link to go to the Yahoo! Babel Fish website.

Enter "whatismyipaddress.com" following the "http://" protocol in the "Translate a web page" box."

Click on the "Select from and to languages" drop down menu. Scroll through the list. Highlight and click "Spanish to English." Click the "Translate" button.

Notice how the WhatIsMyIPAddress service registers a different IP address from the one you just noted in step 1. This is because Yahoo! Babel Fish is a service that provides "free online text and web page language translation tools." So when you use this tool to browse the Web, this service acts as a go-between between your computer and the Web page you're visiting in order to provide language translation services. You direct Yahoo! Babel Fish to the Web page you want to "translate," Yahoo Babel Fish retrieves the information from that page, translates it and passes it back to your computer just like a proxy server. Since Yahoo! Babel Fish is the one actually retrieving information from the websites you visit, the visible IP address belongs to Yahoo! instead of the computer you're using.
