The Michigan Rummy Game Instructions

Michigan Rummy is a card game that is sometimes known as Tripoli. Like other versions of Rummy, the players strive to reduce the number of cards in their hands to zero. Unlike most other versions, Michigan Rummy utilizes a game board and betting chips to create a game with a more casino-style feel to it. Players strive to collect more and more of the chips as the game progresses.

How to Play
Step 1
Draw a card from the deck. Every player does so, and the player who draws the highest card becomes the dealer. The dealer deals out the entire pack to each player and also an extra "dummy hand" that the dealer owns. It is not required that each player get the same number of cards.

Step 2
Place a betting chip into each of the nine slots on the game board. All other players do the same, except the dealer who places two chips into each slot. The dealer may either swap his entire hand for the dummy hand, or he may sell the dummy hand to the player who bids the most chips.

Step 3
Begin play with the player to the dealer's left. He can play any suit, but he must play the lowest card of that suit. If he does not have that card, he must pay a one-chip penalty to each player. The player holding the next card up in the same suit plays next, and so on, until either the sequence ends with the Ace or the person holding the dummy hand plays a card from the dummy hand to keep the sequence going.

When the sequence ends, the last player to play begins a new sequence by playing the lowest card he can in a suit of the opposite color (red, if the last suit was black). If that player cannot do so, the player on his left plays. The players continue until a player has no more cards in his hand and collects the jackpot.

Step 4
Collect any chips earned through "money cards." The board sections are marked with images of certain cards, as well as a "poker bonus" section. Any time a player plays a card that is marked as a money card on the board, he collects the chips in that card's section. This does not apply if that player has had to pay a penalty during that hand. The player with the highest-ranking poker hand at the end of the game collects the poker bonus.
